I would concur with the general assessment that the GOG version is the best one to get, though, and apparently has some of the compatibility tweaks needed for newer systems already done. Origin ignored my tweets, and the mainstream gaming media seems to think SC4 no longer exists, and falsely assumes everyone is on the C:S bandwagon. My efforts to put pressure back on Origin, unfortunately, haven't really gone anywhere. Origin's issues, however, are documented.

It may be that those folks also had unpatched disc copies installed, and the NAM had been picking those up instead of the Steam version, or, hearing the need for "patches" to use the NAM, tried installing EP1 Update 1 on the Steam version unnecessarily, which, of course, failed.

There have been some people who have claimed Steam was selling nerfed copies, but there's been absolutely zero documentation of those claims, and they run counter to my experience. The executable is Version 1.1.641, which is the fully pre-patched digital version. I'm actually running the Steam version at the moment. However, if everyone made Origin accountable for selling a crap copy of the game, it's more likely they would stop doing so. Sadly that took a lot of patience, I suspect the refund was more because it was cheaper than the cost of support at that point.

Origin actually refunded a user recently who had bought SC4 a long time ago, because he couldn't patch the game. Ideally, wait for a sale and get it for a reasonable price, but if you must have it now and cash isn't an issue, GoG is the version I'd go for.

Gamersgate, Amazon (be careful, they sell three versions, one is via Origin) and other digital re-sellers also offer a DRM-Free version of SC4. Not that I'd recommend Steam, DRM is something I am totally against. Where did you read about problems with the Steam version? I've never heard anything along these lines myself. Sadly, you've just missed a sale (a week ago) where you could have picked it up for under a fiver. I think the typical day to day price is a rip off for such an old game. I will chip in here and recommend the GoG version also, but actually not right this minute.
